AMY'S JOURNEY © Bett Padgett

This song goes out to all the Turtle Watch groups who laboriously and lovingly protect sea turtles from insensitive pranksters and vehicles. The lives of these creatures are already difficult enough and without the help of these organizations we would have fewer of them.

Amy comes out from the water; the waves have helped her in
She recalls the feel of her feet upon the hard packed sand.
The night air doesn’t faze her as she heads up to the dune.
She knows just where she’s going and she’s guided by the moon.
Amy take your time now, the night is still so young.
You don’t visit very often, every spring you always come.

She shakes the salt sea water while scoping out the land.
Looking for a place to build a bed in the sand.
A cradle then she made in her ritual dance
And stood still for the longest time as though she were entranced.
Amy, don’t cry for your babies as they leave the nest.
They’re watched by earthly angels; now put your mind to rest.

A miracle to witness; a wonder I behold
I barely dare to breathe as Amy buries her gold.

One foot moves, then another as she builds a mound of sand
And covers up her treasure, safe from beast and man.
She heads down to the water, never looking back.
The reflection of the moon will keep her in her tracks.
Amy’s tears will fill the ocean, just from where she came.
Next spring she may return, I hope to see her again.

A breeze is gently blowing as she swims against the tide.
I want to stay here longer, not go back inside.
I’d like to think of Amy, the short time that she was here.
The struggles she might have in the coming year.
Amy, don’t cry for your babies as they leave the nest.
They are watched by earthly angels; now put your mind to rest.
