The Old Baldy Foundation’s big fundraising event is ‘The Pirates Are Coming’ and they DO! With the money generated from the family fun weekend event they upkeep the lighthouse, grounds and the museum. I volunteered to help the event in 2008 and was inspired to write a song about it.

THE PIRATES CAME TO BALD HEAD

One by one and two by two they crowded at the harbor
Children of all ages came that warm and fateful day.
The canon fired such thunderous roars, ‘smoke billowed upward
And all this fighting seemed for naught to keep pirates at bay.
Sinbad drew the last fire from the Meka II
And they landed on the West Shore, the captain and his crew
“Ahoy mates, me gang is here, we’ll be stayin’ on yer island”
The pirates came to Bald Head and wouldn’t go away.

Blackbeard’s crew claimed the lighthouse grounds and raised their jolly roger
They set up camp and a pirate school for all who came around.
Young scallywags learned the pirates’ ways of firing guns and swagging swords
Aye Cap’n, avast the fighting now, we’ll put our weapons down.”
Captain Jim, the peg-legged, brought Magic Island too
And Cascabel and Braze spent their doubloons, quite a few.
“Ahoy mates, me gang is here, we’ll be stayin’ on yer island”
The pirates came to Bald Head and wouldn’t go away.

The Pirate Band played through the night, a-singin’ and a-dancin’
The music rang till the grog ran out and all the shanties sung.
Jacks and wenches, ladies fair counted all the booty
Shouting ‘Blimey mate’ and ‘argh, argh, argh’ at the dryin’ up of rum.
The town all partied with them and wore the pirates out
They packed up camp and sailed away, the stars showed them the route.
“Goodbye Buckos, we’re leavin’ here but won’t ferget yer island”
“Thanks for all the good times and we’ll see yer back next year!”
