SATURDAY OCTOBER 6 8:00 PM CHRIS ROSSER |
If you were at Little Lake Hill for either of the Free Planet Radio shows you will not want to miss this show! Chris' understanding of music, all kinds of music from all over the world is exceptional. He grew up in Casar, NC (population 350!) and was raised in a Baha'i family, exposing him to a diversity of cultures. He studied classical piano with his mother, but was attracted to the haunting music and chanting at Baha'is religious gatherings. He played many instruments in high school and his fondness for the music of Bruce Hornsby, Jaco Pastorious and Pat Metheny led him to a full scholarship at the University of Miami School of Music where he studied jazz piano and studio recording. He taught himself to play acoustic guitar and focused on songwriting after discovering the music of contemporary folk musicians like Shawn Colvin, Nanci Griffith, David Wilcox and scores of others. At that time he studied Indian music and learned the tabla (drums). After two years as a recording engineer in Charlotte he left for the mountains of NC to pursue a career of producer, songwriter and performer.
As a multi-instrumentalist Chris plays Indian dotar, Turkish cumbus, guitars, piano and melodica. He tours nationally and has shared stages with folks such as Nickel Creek, John Mayer, Shawn Mullins, John Gorka, David Wilcox, Tom Rush and more. Chris has 4 solo recordings as well as one recorded with Free Planet Radio. He has won songwriting contests at the Rocky Mountain Folks and Merle Watson Festivals. With the help of a 1999 WNC Regional Artists grant, and was awarded a songwriter/composer fellowship from the NC Arts Council. No stranger to Cary's (former) Six String Cafe, many of you may be fans of Chris already! You can learn more about him at his website.
His music is a blend of folk, jazz and influences from all over the globe......Have a listen to selections from three of his CDs
