SOLD OUT!!!!
Something of a late-bloomer, singer/songwriter Kate Campbell didn't begin her professional career until the age of 30, but in short order, she managed to include the likes of Guy Clark, Emmylou Harris, Buddy Miller and the heart of the Muscle Shoals classic soul and R&B! Since her 1995 recording debut she has put together a body of work matched only by Emmylou in consistency, Lucinda Williams in terms of pure, wrenching, honest self-examination and self-revelation and no one for its sheer display of broad-based, intimate artfulness.
Her endearing, clear-water vocal delivery, eloquent gift for storytelling (which has drawn repeated comparisons to the writing of Flannery O'Connor, Eudora Welty and William Faulkner) and her easy command of many range of American music styles have earned her recognition as a formidable talent by critics, musicians and the public.
Kate has 7 CDs to her credit...Her first, Songs from the Levee. Her second and third, Moonpie Dreams (1997) and Visions of Plenty (1998) both garnered "Folk Album of the Year" nominations from the Nashville Music Awards. 1999's Rosaryville extended the upward-bound arc of enthusiastic radio airplay. Her latest CD, Wandering Strange, is a Gospel recording, quite unlike any other that has come before it. Not surprising, as she is the daughter of a Baptist preacher from Sledge, Mississippi. Her sixth CD, Monuments, released in May of 2003. Kate comments, “My albums usually have a theme, and with Monuments, Edmondson’s life and carvings were the impetus for the recording. Each of the songs on the album references a monument of some kind. Walt Aldridge (Producer) and I approached the album by building each song as we heard it, without worrying about whether or not the songs all had the same production style. So from that perspective, this album has some sounds that are not heard on my previous CDs.” Her seventh CD is BRAND NEW, on which she does many covers.
Her formative years were in the very core of the civil rights movement of the 1960's and the indelible experiences of those years have shaped her heart, character and convictions.
Kate has been a featured performer at the Cambridge Folk Festival and the Philadelphia Folk Festival. She has also been featured on NPR's All Things Considered and Live From Mountain Stage.
"Kate Campbell belongs in the company of literati like Mary Chapin Carpenter, Nanci Griffith and Lucinda Williams." New Country
"Her songs artfully skirt the border between country and rock with a few blues twists. Campbell is a major talent. Simplicity, sincerity and sophistication run rampant here. If Eudora Welty wrote songs, they would probably sound a lot like those of Kate Campbell." Boston Globe
"Her sharply detailed songs blend literary grace with earthy insight....she is a remarkable writer." Philadelphia Inquirer
"Possessed of the lyrical grasp of Lucinda Williams and the eloquent vocal timbre of Emmylou Harris-Kate Campbell is a major talent." Time Out
