CROW JOHNSON

FRIDAY, JULY 26TH

8:00 PM

Crow grew up in Texas and took her first name, "Crow" from a grandfather who played a big part in raising her. (Yes, there is a smattering of Native American!) Her professional gigs started in 1962 with coffeehouse, folk club, TV, radio and concert appearances....split nights with Guy Clark, Townes VanZandt, Janis Joplin, Jerry Jeff Walker to name a few....the whole amazing early Texas songwriting enchilada. As part of the duo, AVALON, Crow moved to London, England in 1968. there, they had a major recording and publishing contracts with EMI and worked with an amazing lineup...from Denny Laine, Trevor Burton, Gary Wright and the Rolling Stones. It was a great time to be an American musician working out of London, living in a cowman's cottage ten kilometers from Stonehenge. Returning to the States, she found a patch of Ozark forest in which to build a cabin, live simply, share her life with 'the perfect man' (since 1984). A cancer survivor since 1991, she carries an awareness of our brief time here....and obvious joy in her work.

A multi-instrumentalist, Crow uses guitar, banjo, piano and harmonica to paint the scene for unexpected turns, melodies and textures. Her sound is a soulful storytelling mountain folk-jazz all her own. Four decades of performance...a lifetime of passion. Folk Roots Magazine says, "her style is contemporary folk with a 'just right' dash of jazz and blues....faultless. superb...sheer elegance and magic."  Tom Paxton says, "Prepare to fall in love. Her music always celebrates the human connection." Crow is the first recipient of the "Spirit of Kerrville Award" (1993) and a World Folk Music Association's "Kate Wolf Memorial Award" (1995). She is a fellow traveler and colleague, cancer survivor, an always-student and sometimes-mentor.

Crow has released six CDs and is included on countless compilations. Hear some snippets from her 1995 release "PAINTING STORIES 'CROSS THE SKY" below.
