JANUARY 4TH SHOW

Mother nature up to her tricks!

8:00 P.M.

In STATEMENT OF PURPOSE (David's new yet-unreleased CD) he states that he's lived for half a century now, and for half that time, "earned my way as an artist. As a child of my times I looked to the future and the promise of a better world. Some years ago I noticed a shifting of perspective in my work. As though responding to a siren's call, I answered the irresistible impulse to revisit the past. And like many others before me, I discovered it is easier to improve the past than it is to improve the future. .....It took me 50 earned years to discover my purpose as an artist was to look back. It's as though I've been preparing my whole life to write these songs, where I aim to make the personal of family lore and hometown memories a universal. My domain is the life and times of what I have come to know as the very dear past. Back before we all got to be so mad at each other. That's where I'll be in the foreseeable future. Back in the past spotlighting moments of humanity."

Massengill fits into the same American tradition of ironic exaggeration and humor that gave rise to Mark Twain and Garrison Keillor.

"That David Massengill made the lap dulcimer his instrument of choice tells us a lot about the soft-spoken native of northeastern Tennessee. He accompanies his performances with an instrument indelibly Appalachian, yet conquers the most urban of musical communities." He does it without losing that remarkable southern gift for storytelling. "... Music Boulevard  And a true storyteller he is!!

"David Massengill is a singer-songwriter who has been more heard about than heard, whose songs have been covered by Joan Baez, Nanci Griffith and the Roches." Rolling Stone

"There's an inherent spirituality to some of his writing. but it's obviously a spirituality born of considerable thought, not blind faith. His voice has the kind of Southern drawl that makes for compelling storytelling and the arrangements, which are built around his mountain dulcimer playing, seem just right."Sing Out!

"He possesses a pure brilliance that is difficult to ignore." Boston Globe

"Massengill's lyrical facility is the most astounding to appear since that of Elvis Costello; he can be wickedly funny and deeply touching in the same line, and his imagination seems unlimited."The All American Music Guide

David has three CDs on Plump Records, and soon to release his 4th. COMING UP FOR AIR  won the BEST ALBUM of Independent labels in 1992 and was voted in the top ten albums of the year by WWUH in Hartford.

David studied Anthropology at UNC in Chapel Hill, but always wanted to be a Bohemian, which is how he got his start in music. You will have to come to the show to find out the end of this story!
