Billy's back! We've long awaited his return. His shows in September, 2001, right after the attack were perfect medicine. See details below (11th show on previous shows) and also pictures from the highlights of the children's show on the lawn. |
"Chicago native Billy Jonas has been living in a percussion-rich environment for most of his life, making music on pots, pans, garbage cans, bells, and horns for much of his life. Many folks know him primarily for his role as a children's and young audience entertainer (his CD "What Kind of Cat Are You?!" won the 2003 First Place Award for Children's Music from the American Federation of Independent Music), but that doesn't begin to reflect the extent of his talent or the scope of his audience. He has devoted as much time to writing and performing for his peers as he has delighting kids and their parents."...Philip Van Vleck. Among his influences are Pete Seeger, Joni Mitchell, Frank Zappa, Shawn Colvin and Parliament-Funkadelic. He won acclaim with his first "adult/general audience album Life So Far and has spent time on the New York Times Best Seller List. He is a multi-instrumentalist playing guitar and a variety of "industrial RE-percussion". His performances and original music are energetic romps, thriving on audience participation. "When I am performing," says Billy, ",my main instruments are the people. Songs are vehicles for creating a loop of energy between performer and the audience."
He came to Asheville in 1990 and found a spot on the local folk scene performing in the duo 'The Billys" with Bill Melanson. After the duo ended in 1995 he kept with the recycled instruments theme in his recording of LIFE SO FAR . He is backed by Chris Rosser on glass bowls and cittern and by David Blum on short wave radio. Sound interesting? It is! Dirty Linen Magazine says it is "wild winded word magic...." Sing Out says Billy's is an "Exquisite craft...". Fayetteville Morning News says that Billy "touches the most hardened hearts."....and he does. Jonas' compositions use elements of world music and socially conscious lyrics, but it's the layering of strange sounds that cause his music to come into its own.
David Wilcox says, "Billy's unique sound keeps you curious as the lyric surprises" He and his wife, Nance, bough a box of THIRTY CDs to give to friends because it's the "highest concentration of fun and inspiration that can fit in a jewel box!"
Allison Krauss, "Billy Jonas' talent and wit make him and his music irresistible. Whenever I see him perform my face hurts from smiling!"
John Platt (WFUV, New York) says, "Billy Jonas has a musical magnetism that calls to mind Michael Hedges and Bobby McFerrin....whimsical and profound"
Billy says, "If you've never been to a 21st neo-tribal hootenanny, come on!" You can learn more about Billy by visiting his website.
Have a listen to some of Billy's music and learn why he is such a special dynamic songwriter and performer!
