Once a die-hard rocker, Don Conoscenti is one of the most respected musicians and critically acclaimed songwriters in acoustic music today. His live performances are a unique fusion that Don has made his signature by soulfully blending roots musical styles. He drives his acoustic, one-man band with unusual frailing and fingerpicking styles, trance-inducing rhythms, unexpected segues, humor, personal reflections and amazing narratives. His wayward, angelic voice entices audiences on a journey through songs about lovers, outcasts, healing, murder and redemption. Don commands an astonishing array of instruments: acoustic and electric 6 & 12 string guitar, steel guitar, bass, keyboard, drums, percussion, flute, recorder, mandolin and harmonica. At seventeen he set out across America, traveling by whatever means available, from freight hopping to hitchhiking, from trucks to motorcycles. He trekked to every one of the forty-eight contiguous states plus Hawaii, Jamaica, South America and Japan. Now based in Colorado, he tours incessantly and is part of a nationwide family of musicians. His stellar guitar playing and dynamic vocals attract folks such as Tom Paxton, Ellis Paul, Pierce Pettis and David Wilcox. Drawn by his gentle nature and impressive talent, friends (as the aforementioned) eagerly contribute guest appearances on Conoscenti's albums. |

His 1999 release, Mysterious Light, climbed into the top 20 CDs played by folk and acoustic DJs worldwide. NPR, World Cafe and Acoustic Cafe all spotlight his music. Acoustic Guitar Magazine says of this disc: "An intimate affair featuring just a guy with a guitar and a killer voice....With a band-in-the-box fingerpicking style and a soulful, angelic tenor voice, Don creates engaging, thoughtful songs that sit up and beg to be noticed." He was voted Musician of the Year in Atlanta, winner of the Rocky Mountain Folks Fest Troubadour Contest and was a National Academy of Songwriters Acoustic Artist of the Year finalist. An exert from an interview with James Cassara in Ashville's Rapid River Monthly: I had the most amazing experience recently. I was up in Washington DC this past week, and had some extra time. David Wilcox and his wife Nance Pettit were up there, and we got together, along with Billy Jonas, who happened to be passing through. I got invited to visit the library of congress and I took David along with me and we got to go through the Woody Guthrie archives, seeing these paper bags and things he wrote lyrics and ramblings on. All these artifacts about his life. They ended up putting together a Don Conoscenti file for me. Just another folkie traveling the dusty roads. Woody and me, that's pretty damn good company, I'd like to think. |
