THURSDAY MAY 6 7:30 PM BOTHY BAND'S WITH PATSY O'BRIEN |
Paddy Keenan is generally acknowledged as the most accomplished and innovative Uilleann piper performing today, and is rightly acclaimed as being among the best pipers who have ever lived! He was born in Trim , County Meath, Ireland in a musical family. Paddy's father and grandfather were both multi-instrumentalists who played the Uilleann pipes. Traditional Celtic music was the fabric that held his family together. Paddy took on the pipes at the age of ten. He played his first major concert at the Gaiety Theater in Dublin when he was fourteen. Later, he played with his father and brothers around Ireland in a group called the Pavees. At seventeen he left Ireland to play blues and rock and roll in England and Europe, broadening his musical range. upon returning to Ireland he began playing traditional music again. Paddy soon found even wider acclaim as a founding member of the Bothy Band and traditional music has never been the same since. The Bothy Band recorded six legendary albums from 1975-1979, all of which still hold a place in the best of popular Celtic music. The band's sound merged a driving rhythm with traditional instrumentation. Paddy's virtuosity on the pipes and his fervor of playing made him a key driving force of this legendary group. Bothy Band-mate, Donal Lunny, describes Paddy as the 'Jimi Hendrix of the pipes"! While he most often plays traditional Irish music, he's equally adept at other styles and can play anything from bluegrass to jazz. He has 4 solo CDs and has recorded on more than 28 other CDs and movie soundtracks. Paddy was the winner of the coveted TG4 Gradam Ceoil 2002 Award for Musician of the Year.
Paddy brings with him award winning guitarist and singer Patsy O'Brien. Patsy has played with Paddy for some time now and has performed with Eileen Ivers on occasions. This is going to be ONE GRAND SHOW! Have a listen to some tunes below.
