GERRY O'BEIRNE

ROSEY SHIPLEY

Fresh and engaging Celtic music, beautifully played by some of the top musicians on the scene!

Several years ago I was listening to WUNC FM Radio's Back Porch Music and heard a tune by the Willow Band. Quickly, I inserted a tape and saved it to enjoy this one song. Not knowing a thing about them, I was extremely pleased and surprised to learn that I actually KNOW some of the members! We are so fortunate to have them here at Little Lake Hill.

Gerry O'Beirne is no stranger here. This will be his third visit to Little Lake Hill! Irish songwriter, guitarist and singer Gerry O'Beirne was born in Ennis in County Clare and raised in the West of Ireland and in Ghana in West Africa. Gerry is not only a self-taught master of the six and twelve string guitar, he is also a renowned songwriter. Several of his songs have been covered by artists on the Irish music scene. Maura O'Connell recorded Half Moon Bay on her album Stories as well as Western Highway, Shades of Gloria and The Isle of Malachy. Mary Black recorded The Holy Ground and named her CD after it. Cathie Ryan recorded Shades of Gloria and The Lights of San Francisco. Gerry O'Beirne has toured around the globe with several bands and artists including Patrick Street, The Sharon Shannon Band, Midnight Well (which featured his unique slide guitar playing), The Waterboys, Andy M Stewart, Martin Hayes, Kevin Burke and Andy Irvine. He has performed at the White House, opened for the Grateful Dead, and played electric guitar with Marianne Faithfull. As a producer Gerry has a large number of albums to his credit including "Promenade" for Kevin Burke and Micheal O'Dhomhnaill (winner of the Grand Prix Du Disque at Montreux), "Irish Times" by Patrick Street, "Man In The Moon" and "Donegal Rain" by Andy M Stewart, "First Footing" by Anam, The "Connaughtman's Rambles" by Martin O'Connor, "Up Close" by Kevin Burke, "Lifting The Veil" by Fiona Joyce, "To Anybody At All" by Clandestine, "Fine Small Storm" by Jen Hamel and many more. Gerry's album was chosen as one of the best 12 independent releases by Performing Songwriter magazine, and the album was also chosen as one of FolkworldÌs top ten albums of the year. He appeared last year on Prairie Home Companion and from that program Western Highway was chosen as the audio highlight on the PHC web site.

EJ Jones has played the Highland bagpipe since age eleven and has been in the prize lists of the U.S. Piping Foundation and the Nicol-Brown Chalice. He is a master also on border pipes, flutes, and whistles. He founded, writes music for and plays with the group Clandestine, from 1991 through the present. With Clandestine he has recorded four CDs, toured nationally, and won numerous awards. E.J.'s playing is the result of years spent in traditional study; his imagination and orchestration open up new avenues for the band in Celtic music.

Rosie Shipley, a native of Baltimore, Maryland, has been playing the fiddle since she was three years old. She learned her first Irish tunes at the age of eight from master fiddler Brendan Mulvihill. Though she was more interested in Brendan's pets at the time, she stuck with her fiddle lessons and grew passionate about traditional music as the years went by. As a teenager, Rosie attended the Gaelic College of Arts and Crafts on Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, where she became well versed in the music that came to Cape Breton from Scotland over 150 years ago. Rosie performs, conducts workshops, and participates in festivals on the East Coast and in Nova Scotia. When home in Baltimore, she runs a popular private music studio for Irish and Cape Breton music. At Home, her debut recording of Irish and Cape Breton music, features Rosie, pianist Matt Mulqueen, and Rosie's brothers Peter (fiddle) and Trevor (flute/uilleann pipes/tin whistle).

Have a listen to some of Willow Band.
