GREG GREENWAY

FRIDAY, JANUARY 31st, 2003

8:00 PM

Greg Greenway is one of those difficult-to-categorize performers who have found a home in the modern acoustic genre. Originally from Richmond, VA, he moved to Boston for its rich Folk Music tradition. Musically, Greg draws his inspiration from all over the map---gospel, rock, blues and world music. Jay Miller of the Patriot Ledger says, "Greg has always been a departure from the usual folk singer mode, his dynamic vocals soaring with gospel fervor and his engaging live shows building to almost rock 'n' roll intensity." The Boston Globe says, "....Confessional one moment, rambunctiously disarming the next..."  Greg's humanity and his soulful affinity for the audience is obvious in his performance. Greg's shows have been some of the most energetic and the most genuine that I have ever seen!

Greg now has four solo releases. A Road Worth Walking Down was nominated for two Boston Music Awards. Singing For the Landlord was one of the top 5 CDs in 1995 on the Folk DJ list. Mussolini's Head, released in 1998, and his most recent CD, Something Worth Doing. He has been included on numerous compilations as well, including Putumayo World Music's Shelter, Christine Lavin's Big Times in a Small Town, Sliced Bread's Phil Ochs' Tribute CD and the newly released compendium of disrespectful car songs from NPR's Car Talk, Car Talk, Car Tunes. He sings about political issues, racism, violence, the environment and includes the audience in many spoofs on the fun side of life. He has performed at Carnegie Hall (in the New York Singer/Songwriter festival), NPR's World Cafe, nationally syndicated Mountain Stage and at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame honoring Phil Ochs. He was on CNN''s World Beat in a segment on socially conscious artists and has performed with Pete Seeger, Judy Collins, Arlo Guthrie and countless others. Tom Paxton tells Greg, "Keep on like you're going and keep, above all, your belief in the spirit that is music." And Greg continues to do just that!
